Racing had become so popular during the '60's that not only was it possible for the ordinary man on the street to go out and buy an off-the-shelf racer like the Shelby Mustang, it was soon possible for him to just RENT one for the weekend! The enlightened car rental car company which decided to get in on the act was HERTZ, which, in 1966, ordered 936 Shelby Mustangs. Most cars were painted white.
