Jim bought this 289 Ford wagon in Boston in 1969, when he & Mark returned to the US (having shipped the Fiat 850). For the 3 years in Ethiopia, they had stored the TA Tickford-bodied MG in Framingham, Massachusetts. Jim rented a closed trailer to haul it to what was to be their new home in Athens, Ohio. While at a motel in Framingham, Jack Larned found Jim underneath the Wagon installing overload shocks and invited him to dinner. Result: they formed International Management Development, Inc. an organization that eventually ran executive training programs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zaire. En route to Athens, Jim & Mark were alerted by the radio that our moon-bound astronauts were about to land there. They stopped at a motel to find a TV but no one was at the desk. The owner’s home was next to the lobby and the TV was on, and they allowed the travelers to join them and witness the landing (they had seen on the lift-off 9 days earlier in a hotel in Amsterdam). After dropping off the MG in Athens, they went west to meet up with the rest of the family. Somewhere on that trip, the Ford acquired an aftermarket air conditioner, but it couldn't be used with the trailer (so they chopped the top off the trailer to lower its frontal area, which helped). At age 16, Mark habitually flogged that wagon pretty hard. He learned all about brake fade descending winding Appalachian roads, when its drums would completely give out.
