I backed off the bearing retaining ring to the first spot where the countersunk holes for the locking screws corresponded with the threaded holes in the hub. Then checked the bearings were not binding before putting everything back in place (reverse sequence of removal). The Deli passed the MOT and doesn't make any adverse noise from the front wheelbearings, adjusted more by luck than judgement, thought the Haynes Manual states that the baked off ring should only be at 15ftlbs of torque.
