The P-40 was a N-model and it belonged to the second squadron of the 78thFighter Aviation Regiment of the Northern Fleet(2./78 MIAP).The unit operated from Vaenga II air base near Murmansk.The pilot of the Curtiss was Sub.Lt.Andrey Sergeyevich Kovalenko and he was killed.It is said that his remains were only buried in the seventies.
