That isn't something in the background that looks like it's growing from out of the little Piper Cub. It's a device that was used in WWII - it allowed Cubs to land (if that's the correct term) on a cable stretched between two masts that extended from the side of large US Navy ships. This was known as the 'Brodie System.'
