My husaband was posted to Gan just before we met in 1972. He took his mid posting leave in Hong Kong never thinking he would be back this way again. We got Married in 1973 and spent a 2 year honeymoon (well it was for me) in Hong Kong from July 1974 - July 1976. While in Gan he worked with a civilian, who we later worked out, also worked with my dad in Tobruk. The world is small, and the RAG is even smaller.

Hello John, What a fascinating tour of a little known Island in the Indian Ocean, I have actually been to this Island on three occasions albeit for short stays only. I was on HMS Blackpool in 1961 and HMS Aisne in 1964, we were on our way to Singapore, and used a tanker in the bay for refueling. I can remember playing football against the RAF and swimming off the beach almost on the end of the runway. Good memories of a very remote part of the world. Ken

Are there any guys staioned at Gan from the latter part of 1960 to 1961 working in MCU?

Wing Commander Manson (Rtd) lives at 30 miles from me. RTTL 2748 is in a maritime museum in Bristol and Pinnace 1374 is still plying the waters around Holyhead.

Hello to all. I served in MCU from 1960 to 1961. I was an electrician. I just wonder whether anyone on Gan at the time would remember me. Also an electrician in MCU was a Cpl. Doug Scott and others I remember. I remember when Rttl 2748 ran aground on some coral reef on the opposite end of the atol one evening. It was under the command of a certain Flt. Lt Manson. Hope to hear from others on Gan at the same time as me.

Anyone help Mohammed on his quest..... Dear John cooper Just saw your article(world war2 memories) on RAFGAN web site. Thanks a lot for the great job you guys have done during the service. I am from Feydhoo, Addu atoll, wondering to ask you for some historical information about gan and the RAF occupation. I am very interested in RAF activities which has taken place from 1939 to 1976. I was born in mid 1974 and I havnt experienced anything which has happened during RAF service in Maldives. I would highly appreciate if you could kindly send any photographs of RAFGAN to me . Currently I am studying at Australian Maritime College in Tasmania, Australia. My address is as follows 5/67 Georgetown Road Newnham Tas 7248 email: molirar@hotmail.com I would also appreciate if you can kindly find a video tape which has been recorded at RAFGAN during your service period. I am really interested in watching them. Thanking you in advance Kind regards Mohamed Liraar

From Tony who was on MCS Gan 1958 One afternoon the weekly Sunderland arrived and I took the crew ashore in the marine tender. On our arrival at the 'pier' the Captain of the a/c asked me the earliest time I could ferry them out to their 'plane the following morning. I thought quickly and replied "0830hrs, Sir". He replied, " Make it 7.30". I retorted, "Sir there will not be enough tide". He replied, "I said 7.30. That is an order". Well there was no arguing with that so I just said, "Yes, Sir". Promptly at 0730 hrs, the following morning he and his crew turned up. I was sitting in the marine tender which rocked gently against the pier. The Captain said nothing but gave me a look which is difficult to describe but combined 'I know best' , 'I told you so' and 'how dare you give a time an hour later than I asked for'. He and the crew climbed in to the boat which, now laden, settled on to the sand and was obviously going nowhere. To give the man his due he said no more than, "When can you take us out to the a/c, coxswain"? I replied with more than a little satisfaction.,"0 830, Sir". They all disembarked and trooped off to the Officers Mess until the appointed time

Any of you Gannites that served on Gan from 1958-1961 that want to get together for an informal chat and reminiscing over the good old 'Pioneering' days of Gan then give us some idea of how many would like to attend, approx., when and where.

Visited Gan many many times between 1957/1960 as a "siggie" ; on 205 Sqdn Shacks, then again between 1961/1964 as "Siggie" ; on C-in-C's VIP Hastings of FECS (WJ325). Happy days indeed.

At Gan in 1964. The photos here refresh my memory of a previous staging through in 1959 to Changi, delayed 3 days, great posting, remember the beery nights (and sometimes days!), Good old Fred!

Eric Sumsion was travelling to Gan from Kat on 3rd July 1959 in Hastings TG580, the aircraft crashed on the runway, all the crew and passengers thankfully survived this prang, I will be adding this story to my SPLASHDOWN GAN site in a few days under BANGS and PRANGS, meanwhile if any of you PIONEERS of GAN recall this accident and can add to the story please let me know, Eric was a member of 8 RFP and left Gan in May 1960

Come on lads, 'stand by yer beds' and sign in, let others know you are here, these Gan pictures have had 163 visits in its first 16 days. This today is an Island of Dreams for many, we all went there for free, those sunsets looked even more remarkable after a skinful, the lagoon was out of this world, the commradeship second to none, the only drawback was the 'not having'............
