  • My dad, Flt.lt. Ray Stowe was stationed at the Sunderland Wing 1950-52 and was in the aircraft that blew up while loading bombs. He lost a kneecap etc., but survived and became the squadron adjudant. Looking at the photographs here, I am delighted to see so many places I knew so well...the Pool, the school, and the slipway where I fished and fished and fished! We lived initially just off the Buka Temah road, and were eventually housed up on Hyde Park Gate.

  • I served at Seletar 1957-58. I worked as a Wireless Operator in the RCC(sigs) which was next door to the Ops Room opposite the Pier. Your Photos have bought back many happy memories of the Sunderlands and the camp itself. Great Times and a great web site.

  • Hi John I was based at RAF Seletar as a photographer with the Far East Flying Boat Wing from 1950 – 52. I did several trips to RAF Iwakuni in Japan via Hong Kong and have been trying to trace others who were there around the same time, but without luck. So far you’re the nearest I’ve managed to get to someone who actually served there. If you happen to know anyone who was out there at the same time I was, I would appreciate it if you could pass my email address on to them. Many thanks … Harry Dobkin From John Cooper: Contact me at john@cooper286.fsnet.co.u k and I will pass Harry's email address on

  • Had a great day at the Duxford Air Show yesterday, courtesy of the Press, met up with Tony Hawes ex Seletar man, who flew in a Sunderland from China Bay to Seletar (or vice versa!), for those that will be attending the 205/209 Sqn groundcrew reunion four weeks on Wednesday I can tell you that the Sunderland V ML797 is in excellent order, step platform along the galley and bomb bay doors is in place, the drogue is out, all we need is a gallon or two of Tiger and she will be well and truly launched, see you all there!

  • I have downloaded some more photos at the end of Album 4, started Album 5 and will probably go into Album 6, the remainder I have to download are Negatives which take longer to sort out so please keep an eye on these albums over the next few days. The Sunderland albums photographs have been viewed 3500 times in exactly 4 months so I know that of nearly 14000 hits in total that about 25% are viewed by webfooters alone. We are bound sooner or later to find a whole load more guys and hopefully photos.

  • Louis E Frank lives in Florida and tells me today that less than an hour's drive from him is a 'real flying Sunderland',(Fantasy of Flight, Nr Lakeland).I'm hoping to get Frank to tell a hair- raising account of a crash he was involved in at Seletar between 1947/49.

  • Geoff Cole was an R/T operator on the control launch when the Sunderland blew up when being loaded with bombs in 1950, plus he was on the scene when the Sunderland crashed in the Mangrove Swamp. Geoff also recalls flying on bombing missions and the guard duty on the trains from Singapore to Butterworth.

  • Rob Romano from 205/209 late 1950's Groundcrew has been in touch today and also it is 3 months since I started these web site albums and have had over 8000 views, 1800 of them from people looking at Sunderland photos.....so we must be doing something right!

  • I have been in touch with Pete Biggadike who was stationed at West Camp ASF 1958-1959 but ended up doing a stint in the Sunderland hangar for 8 weeks, Pete has a website up and running and there are more fantastic pictures of Seletar on his pages, my main SPLASHDOWN site will include all the details of accessibility shortly.......which leads me on to Alex 'Tich' Carrie 205/209 Sparky from 1957-1959 and then West Camp, ironically Alex, Terry Ball, Lloyd Fenton and myself have renewed acquaintancies after 44 years, more ironically Alex lives but three fields from me and a lot of lamp swinging has occurred since February. It is Alex that has and is providing the bulk of these photos, in itself it is almost a potted history of 205/209 from 1957-1959, I am very thankful that Alex has let the rest of us remember how things really were and not leave it all to our fading imagination, I have also posted some of Alex's photos on the RAF Gan album these are interesting from the Pioneer days of Gan.

  • Tom Johnson from the Fleet Air Arm at Seletar 1958-60 RN Aircraft Holding Unit working in conjunction with HMS Centaur and Albion has been in touch, welcome aboard Tom! (I distinctly remember one of these Carriers coming up the Straits with the rest of the SEATO Fleet to Sembawang Dockyard in 1958, the wash from these vessels nearly knocked us off the wings of the Sunderlands!)

  • In reply to David's thoughts on a 205/9 association, I would think that this was a good idea, as long as we can get enough members initially and to maintain those members.

  • Thinking of the possibility of starting up a 205 Sqn Association if enough interest. I know there used to be one, but when I tried to contact the secretary I received no reply, so assume it folded.
